7,5 Lessons about the Brain

Everything you have been taught about the brain is fundamentally wrong. No lizard brain. No limbic system. No prefrontal cortex.

by Lisa Feldman Barrett

Lisa Feldman Barrett is one of the world's top neuroscientists and she has a very important message for every manager, HR practitioner and academic who may be interested in changing behaviour.

Everything you have been taught about the brain is fundamentally wrong. No lizard brain. No limbic system. No prefrontal cortex. Our brains have identical genes as all reptiles and mammals.

And most importantly the three pounds of grey sponge between your ears has evolved over eons for one primary purpose. To help your complex body to survive and it does this by evolving as a PREDICTIVE MACHINE. It learns from experience, analysing the environment and predicting what you need to do before you are even conscious of your brain's decision pattern. We therefore have less free will than we think.

The only way to change behaviour is to change the neuronal pathways of your predictive brain. This means creating specific NEW ACTIONS designed to change your PREDICTIVE MODEL, which may in turn lead to newer, higher energy and more innovative behaviours in the future.

This is a major breakthrough and may explain why the vast majority of traditional change and transformation programmes simply fail.
