Global Business Schools - a Dangerous Blind Spot?

"Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark."

Carl Sagan

If you are a reader of my blogs you will know that I have been focussing on corruption and global scientific and environmental leadership illiteracy as a major threat to our survival.

In addition I have been focussing on Michel Serres and his three-player game of Biogea - Science - Society as the essential and intelligent framework for a rich and sustainable future.  And that academia including our global business schools need to take the game changing lead here.

Michel Serres three-player game of planet, science and society must now replace the old and obviously destructive two-player game of geopolitics and economics, driven by the ancient cultural DNA of 'priests, warriors and wealth creators'.

With some respect, I suggest that our top business schools remain stuck in the ancient two-player game.  I have just read all their vision and mission statements in careful detail.  If you put them all into one pot you would not be able to tell one from the other.

Not one vision statement - and I repeat - not one mentions the word planet.

Given the recent failure of Cop 27, the daily news about environmental and species destruction, the utter tragedy and stupidity in Ukraine, the level of corruption worldwide - surely the top business schools can see that the urgent leadership demand is for competent planetary leadership?

My Challenge to the Deans and Professors

Should any business school deans or professors read this blog, my challenge is as follows.

Take a serious look at your vision and mission statements.  They belong in what should now be a forgotten age of the two-player game of geopolitics and economics.  Be courageous and recognise that what the world needs now is revolutionary, competent and intelligent leaders that can best manage a planetary system.

If you do not do it - most of you claim to be creative pathfinders - then who will?

Note.  Of course the one crucial word missing from all the pompous, ponderous, platitudinous, self-pleasing, placatory vision statements referred to, is planet.

All the world lies therein, as all the world lies in its omission.
